On October 29th, 2016 at approximately 9:30 pm Deputy Eric Schultz and 832’s Aspen Colorado (K9 Aspen) were dispatched to a missing 79 year old male. As the Bloodhound team arrived on scene, they were told by fellow officers that the male was last seen leaving the residence around 5:30pm. Family members didn’t know which door he exited or a direction of travel.
Shortly after arriving, the K9 team got to work locating a scent article from the residence. Deputy Schultz prepared K9 Aspen and brought her to the front of the residence where he presented the scent article. Several family members were also present because the scent article was contaminated by the family members. K9 Aspen instantly went to work and tracked pass the family members, around the side of the house and back to a small wooded area. She eventually worked towards the east to a main roadway (Riverside Ave). K9 Aspen made a hard turn to the south and worked the shoulder of Riverside Ave where she continued approximately 8 blocks.
While working the intersection of 7th street and Riverside Ave, K9 Aspen worked into a small park which is along the Mississippi River. While working the park she went up to a bench swing and started working towards the river. K9 Aspen went onto a small wooden dock and stared at the water. At this time she stopped working.
Deputy Schultz brought K9 Aspen back onto shore where he attempted to work the area towards the south and west of the park. She had no interest in these areas and she brought Deputy Schultz back to the riverbank and started working just south of the dock. Approximately 10 feet south of the dock the male was located, unfortunately deceased.
The case is still being investigated. K9 Aspen was able to provide quick closure for the family on this tragic incident.
