In Tribute to our great friend, Rex Aaron Stockham
The bloodhound world has lost one of its greatest champions with the recent passing of Rex Stockham. Rex was an agent with the FBI since 1984, with a Masters degree in Forensic Science from George Washington University. While Rex spent several years in Explosives, his true career passion was his development of the Forensic Canine Program in the Bureau.
We met Rex in 2005 at the beginning of that program, and a close professional partnership was born. While Duke provided a wealth of practical experience, Rex was determined to put the ‘science’ behind the abilities of the bloodhound. They were both idea-men, and there was rarely a time that one or the other wasn’t proposing projects, testing or validation of theories. Rex’s ability to clarify and document scent evidence is a continuing legacy to the bloodhound world, and will benefit countless who come after him. The world lost a truly valuable man by his passing.
Duke and Rex quickly formed a strong friendship based on respect and shared purpose during this time, and that friendship continued until his death on October 8, 2016. During that time, Rex was a featured instructor at many of Deputy Dogs’ seminars, sharing his knowledge and understanding with working handlers, fosters and trainers. His input and perspective was invaluable, causing us all to recognize the difference between immediate deployment and investigative deployment. He provoked thought and evaluation of current methods, challenging us all to think, explore and expand our understanding of a bloodhound’s capabilities. His work lives on, and particularly lives within the hearts of all who knew him. His unwavering support of our organization and its mission has meant the world to us.
